In a Shrinking Economy, KMC Media Expands

Three New Magazines for Today’s Savvy Readers

[BEND, OREGON] In response to the growing need for affordable and compelling communications strategies, in an economy that is seeing dramatic cutbacks, at least one Oregon company is expanding its publishing efforts.
KMC Media Co. – founded in 2008 by former executive editor and co-publisher of Cascades East magazine, Kyla Merwin Cheney – has launched three new titles and is managing two others.

“With today’s readers being bombarded with information,” said Cheney, “and with the economy in a volatile state, I see publications shrinking and disappearing all too often. But I wanted to launch these new titles that have been percolating in my mind. So I looked to the example of Arnold Gingrich, founder and editor of Esquire magazine, who launched that title in the Great Depression and helped it flourish during the greatest economic downturn in our history.”

The first new title, OREGON LAKES & RIVERS: STAYING & PLAYING IN THE OREGON CASCADES, is a travel and recreation guide that “speaks to the soul of the landscape and the spirit of those drawn to it,” said Cheney. “It calls directly to travelers who are seeking the escape, thrills and solace that only lakes and rives can offer—with engaging feature stories on accommodations and recreation, resort directories and maps, and travel and gear tips.”

CASCADES LIVING: WORK, PLAY, LIVE will launch in the spring of 2009. It celebrates all that is unique about Central Oregon and the Cascade mountains, with feature stores, profiles, travel advice and maps. Its editorial reach includes recreation & sports, art & culture, wining & dining, home & hearth, kids, fashion & gear, business & industry and events.

The third title KMC Media is releasing this year is Thrive, a community-based, medical resource guide that offers engaging feature stories, profiles, case studies and a complete directory of medical services in the region. This publication is scheduled for release in Summer 2010.

The two other titles managed by KMC Media Co. are HIGH DESERT JOURNAL and PRONGHORN.

Some publishers might say this expansion strategy is crazy. “I want to face this recession with hope and optimism,” responds Cheney. “With readers getting information via the Internet, iPhones and Blackberrys, as well as in print, this economy seemed to me to offer a compelling opportunity to offer multi-media solutions to today’s publishing issues.”

As well as in print magazine, KMC Media releases titles electronically via “page-turner” software. Issue are emailed to interested subscribers and downloads are available to PDAs. “Page turner software lets readers flip pages just like a print magazine,” says Cheney. “You can skip ahead, find specific articles and departments and save pages of interest.”

Print versions are distributed in quantities and dates according to market demands and will be widely circulated to pre-qualified target audiences.
